Emerging and persistent harms

IWF operates Europe's largest centre for assessing, grading and securing the removal of child sexual abuse material online. To do this, we have a team of highly trained, experienced, and resilient analysts and assessors who can provide a view beyond the numbers.

We've brought this together around several key challenges we see online, right now.

In 2025, we have seen how children have faced a mix of persistent and emerging online sexual harms. Persistent threats, such as violence against women and girls continue to cause widespread harm while emerging threats, including AI-generated child sexual abuse material, sexually coerced extortion and abuse targeting older teens, are rapidly increasing in scale, severity, and complexity.

Understanding these differences is critical for effective intervention and prevention.
